New Critical Care Nurse Online Community Launched by RNsights

Boston, MA, May 18, 2012 ?(PR.com)? The new Critical Care Nurse Online Community called RNsights is changing the way nurses share insights and evidence based solutions, collaborate, and find peer support. Organized by nurse specialty, RNsights has thousands of nurse members in other specialties and is now launching a community just for critical care nurses including ER, ICU, Post-op, & Transitional care nurses.

Technology continues to evolve rapidly and at times it can be difficult to stay abreast of the latest developments. For instance, the uses for social media have changed dramatically over the last 10 years. Online communities have evolved to become user friendly (even for those more technically challenged), easily accessible, and some believe they are one of the greatest untapped resources available for today?s professionals.

In the high-pressure, fast-paced world of critical care nursing, communication and consultation with other nursing professionals is imperative. Enter RNsights, a free online professional community that provides support to critical care nurses. With RNsights, critical care nurses can log on with an anonymous user name and immediately access a network of other critical care and specialty nurses nationwide. Tom Ullian, co-founder of RNsights, explains that the site is an important resource for those who:

-Have a specialized question for an expert, specialty nurse, or nurse manager
-Are eager to learn about the policies or procedures of other critical care units
-See patients with a variety of ailments and want to stay abreast of all the latest developments and treatments being utilized
-Might be hesitant to show uncertainty or ask certain questions to colleagues
-Are concerned about sharing too much patient information with a colleague who might know or beware of the patient
-Work in a rural setting, a busy ER, or other environment where colleagues aren?t always immediately available to assist

With RNsights, critical care nurses finally have a supportive peer group across the United States they can easily access with the click of a mouse. In real-time, peers, mentors and experts are available and eager to help resolve issues and answer questions. “There is also a tremendous benefit to patients for this real time cross sharing of evidence based solutions,” says Tom.

“While Listserv and other group email lists were a step forward in trying to connect critical care nurses, they have become an antiquated form of communication. They are cumbersome to manage, tracking responses to questions is difficult, emails on a topic of no interest can clutter one?s mailbox, and answers are not always provided real-time. A critical care nurse?s time is valuable, and RNsights recognizes the importance of being able to get answers quickly and reach other professionals who can freely exchange ideas and concerns,” says Tom.

Many nurse members report that having this free, user-friendly connection with RNsights can reduce stress, increase efficiency and add to the satisfaction and enjoyment of the day. Tom Ullian elaborates, “social media may not have been originally created for this purpose, but when used properly there can be an enormous impact improving the efficiency and effectiveness of critical care nurses nationwide.”

Buffett snags 10 million shares of GM stock

By Paul A. Eisenstein, The Detroit Bureau

Analysts and investors alike will be watching the ticker closely this week to see how the market responds to word that the ?Oracle of Omaha? has grabbed 10 million shares of General Motors (GM) stock.

According to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Warren Buffett?s investment firm Berkshire Hathaway will spend $256.6 million for the stock, a nearly 20 percent?premium over their value of $214.2 million when trading on the New York Stock Exchange wrapped up on Tuesday.

Shares of GM soared early on Wednesday before settling. GM closed the trading day up 0.50 points, or 2.33 percent.

Fisker Delaying Atlantic Plug-in Launch By Full Year

But that?s still well behind the $330 million Buffett would have invested during GM?s November 2010 IPO. And the question is whether this move signals the possible turnaround in GM shares which have been lagging like most automotive stocks in recent months.

The maker has staged a modest recovery from its $19-a-share 52-week-low, and GM stock surged by $1 as soon as the market opened Wednesday morning before settling back slightly.

?I think he is spot-on,? wrote David Kudla, CEO of Mainstay Capital Management, which manages the portfolios for many General Motors retirees.? Kudla emphasized that unlike some other high-profile investors Buffett focuses on the longer-term by buying into companies he sees as selling below their value.

New Nissan Altima is an ?All-American? Car

GM?s current slump comes in sharp contrast to the optimism its IPO was greeted with, many analysts subsequently forecasting its shares could surge as high as $50 or more.? But the maker ? like most of its competitors ? has been hit a variety of headwinds, including an uncertain U.S. economy and the European debt crisis.

That, in turn, has resulted in a slump of the Continental car market ? worsening GM?s own slide in the European market.? The maker had hoped to claw back into the black in 2011 but instead reported a sharp loss which triggered a recent management shake-up.? It is expected to announce the latest in a series of turnaround plans in the coming months.

On the positive side, GM posted an all-time record profit of $7.6 billion. And while European losses hurt its first-quarter performance ? a $1 billion net profit ? earnings from the still-critical North American market shot to $1.7 billion before taxes.

Harold ?Red? Poling Dead at 86

Specifically why Berkshire Hathaway has decided to buy GM stock now is something the investment firm won?t disclose, though some analysts have become increasingly bullish about the industry overall ? and the domestics in particular ? as U.S. car sales continue to outperform the overall economy.

It?s by no means Buffett?s first automotive investment.? He currently holds a roughly 10% stake in BYD, a Chinese automaker focused on battery-based powertrains.? Short for Build Your Dreams, the firm is also one of the world?s largest providers of cellphone and laptop computer batteries.

Buffett himself drives a Cadillac DTS, one of relatively few luxuries for a man who still lives in the same Omaha home he has owned for over half a century.

Does Your Child Have Seasonal Allergies or a Cold? – iVillage

SATURDAY, May 12 (HealthDay News) — It can be difficult during the spring months for parents to determine whether their children have a cold or seasonal allergies, but an expert outlines how to tell the difference.

“Runny, stuffy or itchy noses; sneezing; coughing; fatigue; and headaches can all be symptoms of both allergies and colds, but when parents pay close attention to minor details they will be able to tell the difference,” Dr. Michelle Lierl, a pediatric allergist at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, said in a hospital news release.

“Children who have spring or fall allergies have much more itching of their noses; they often have fits of sneezing and usually rub their noses in an upward motion,” she explained. “They also complain about an itchy, scratchy throat or itchy eyes, whereas with a cold, they don’t.”

When people have allergies, their nasal discharge is usually clear and has the consistency of watery mucus, while those with colds typically have yellowish mucus discharge, Lierl said.

She recommended that children with seasonal allergy symptoms be tested for environmental allergens — such as pollen — that are present during seasons when they have symptoms, but not tested for food allergies or allergens present during seasons when children don’t have symptoms.

If your child has seasonal allergies, Lierl suggested many things you can do to control symptoms:

–Keep windows closed during periods of high pollen and fungal spore levels, and change air conditioner filters every month.

–Change children’s clothing when they come inside from outdoors. Wash clothing to rid them of all outdoor allergens.

–After being outside, children should wash their face, hands and hair, and parents should use a nonprescription saline solution to rinse children’s eyes and nose.

–Limit outdoor activity in the morning, when pollen counts are higher. When traveling, keep vehicle windows closed to keep pollen and other allergens out.

–Make sure children take their allergy medicine daily during pollen season.

How to prepare to sell your small business – Finance & Commerce

Posted: 1:40 pm Mon, May 14, 2012
By Heidi A.?Carpenter

Editor?s note: In this guest column, Heidi A. Carpenter, a commercial transactional attorney for Fafinski Mark & Johnson in Eden Prairie, offers a step-by-step method for getting a small business ready for sale. ?

The complexity of preparing a business for sale can be overwhelming. But advance preparation by the owner likely will lead to more interested buyers, an increased sale price and fewer transaction costs.

After all, buyers are attracted to profitable businesses that are easy to evaluate and operate. For this reason, spending time and resources on completing the following seven steps is worthwhile for most owners:

Get financials in order. Up-to-date, accurate financial statements including balance sheets, income statements, cash flow statements and tax returns should be readily available for buyers to review. Historical financial statements and tax returns also should be ready for disclosure, and a seller should have explanations for any past or present issues. Buyers tend to request this type of information first and will likely evaluate it fully before spending any time looking at other components of the business. Many buyers walk away from deals at this stage because of poor record-keeping, questionable tax practices or lack of information.

Audit contracts and agreements. All written contracts should be reviewed to determine when they expire, whether they are affected by a sale of the business or if they remain to accurately reflect current business dealings and economics.

Verbal agreements and other non-written special arrangements should be memorialized in writing. Many buyers will require such documentation. Further, savvy buyers will quantify the negative impact of the contract provisions (or lack of written contracts with key vendors or customers) and reduce the purchase price as a result.

Identify assets. Inventory must be counted and accurate. Obsolete items should be sold.? Premises should be clean, and equipment must be in good working order and in compliance with regulatory requirements.

I once witnessed a potential buyer being escorted by the seller to a basement where the inventory and equipment for a used sporting goods store was located, and none of the items had been counted, cleaned or organized. The seller admitted that ?he had no idea what was there.? The potential buyer completely discounted the inventory when making an offer and further subtracted from the offer the cost he would incur for counting, organizing and removing obsolete inventory.

In addition to tangible inventory, all copyrights, trademarks, patents, domain names and software should be audited to ensure the business properly owns or holds a license to use such property. Upgrades should also be considered if equipment or software does not meet industry standards.

Scrutinize interrelated transactions. Many small businesses, in some manner, have entered into transactions with its owners, directors, managers or their related family members. Potential buyers, however, will likely be suspicious of such transactions and relationships.

Therefore, a seller should be prepared to disclose and explain the business value of such arrangements to the buyer; or, in the alternative, terminate arrangements that are not economically or otherwise prudent for the business. For instance, if an owner?s non-employee spouse has been provided a company car, it may be advisable to restructure that benefit before marketing the business.

Start the transition. An owner should start preparing the business for his or her eventual departure. Training key employees and managers to operate the business in the owner?s absence is critical. The owner also should begin the transition of customer and vendor relationships to others within the organization so that the impact of the owner?s departure on the business is minimized.

Key employees should also be required to sign agreements protecting the trade secrets, patents, customers and intellectual property of the business to prevent buyers from fearing that the property of the business is susceptible to misappropriation or disclosure.

Confirm ownership. Although seemingly obvious, the ownership records of the business should clearly identify owners and ownership interests. Any verbal transfer of ownership interests or owner departures that have not been documented may be called into question by potential buyers. In addition, it will likely be easier to get departed owners to sign off on their ownership status before an offer from a third party has been received.

Resolve problems. Any pending or threatened litigation, customer complaints or similar issues that may decrease the value of the business must be resolved. An advisory team can assist in formulating a strategy to disclose and address any issues that cannot be resolved prior to the sale.

Completing these seven steps and assembling an experienced team of advisers will maximize the sale price of a small business and help to avoid hassles. With detailed planning, the sale of a business can be a satisfying conclusion to years of hard work.

Time Warner Cable’s CEO doesn’t know what AirPlay is, hates set-top boxes

Time Warner Cable's CEO doesn't know what AirPlay is, hates set-top boxesWhile he might not be the first human to admit unfamiliarity with Apple’s AirPlay, he’s likely to be one of the most recognizable figures amongst the bunch. In a recent interview, Time Warner Cable’s CEO, Glenn Britt, said one of the main challenges faced by digital video was the lack of simple ways to stream internet-based content to television sets. Naturally, that brought up the imminent question about Cupertino’s streaming goods, to which he responded by saying “I’m not sure what AirPlay is,” also adding that “the current Apple TV, the little thing, the hockey puck, really doesn’t do anything to help enable you to get internet material on your TV.” Furthermore, he went on to say, “I hate set-top boxes,” as he believes smart TVs are a better streaming solution compared to other bits that require additional hardware. Perhaps this explains why the TWC iOS apps are still missing out on some much-needed AirPlay action.

Summit canceled as Ukraine isolation deepens over treatment of Tymoshenko

Ukraine was slated to host a summit this week, but with a dozen European leaders boycotting in protest of Kiev’s treatment of Yulia Tymoshenko, Ukraine opted to cancel it instead.

In a stinging humiliation that underscores Ukraine’s increasing isolation, President Viktor Yanukovych today bowed to a boycott by a dozen European leaders angry over treatment of opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko, indefinitely postponing a prestigious summit meeting it was to have hosted this week in the Crimean resort of Yalta.

“Due to the fact that a number of European heads of states are unable to attend the summit of presidents of the Central European Countries in Yalta, Ukraine found it reasonable to postpone it until a later date,” Alexander Dykusarov, a Foreign Ministry spokesman, said in a terse statement.

The event was meant to showcase Ukraine’s growing integration into the European community, and to set the stage for Ukraine’s co-hosting, along with Poland, of the Euro 2012 soccer championships ? a huge event in the life of all Europeans ? next month.

Instead, the growing impression is that Ukraine is falling out of the European orbit and drifting back into Moscow’s embrace.

Leaders of Germany, Estonia, Latvia, the Czech Republic, Austria, Italy, and others have refused to attend the annual regional meeting in an escalating row over the alleged mistreatment of Ms. Tymoshenko,?who was sentenced to seven years in prison last October for “abuse of office” while she was prime minister. She also faces a fresh trial on charges of alleged tax evasion, which is scheduled to open in a Kharkov court later this month.

Tymoshenko, who says all the charges are politically motivated, is currently on a hunger strike and alleges that she has been beaten in prison. She also says she is suffering from severe chronic back pain brought on by her ordeal, and has criticized her treatment by state doctors in a Kharkov clinic. Her family wants her to go to Germany for treatment, but she refuses to leave Ukraine. In any case, there seems little chance the Yanukovych government would let her leave.

She was scheduled to be seen by German doctors at a Kharkov clinic today.

“She has not abandoned her hunger strike and she will not abandon it until the question of her situation has been resolved,” Tymoshenko’s lawyer, Olexandr Plakhotnyuk, told journalists today. “She is drinking only water. What will take place next will be decided after she meets doctors today.”

Tymoshenko was narrowly defeated in presidential elections by Yanukovych two years ago, and was rapidly removed from all her official positions shortly afterward.

She remains Ukraine’s top opposition leader, and her prosecutions by the Yanukovych government are widely suspected of being a means of removing her from the political stage in advance of parliamentary elections slated for later this year. Ukraine’s next presidential polls will be held in 2015.

Calls are now mounting for a boycott of Ukrainian venues for the Euro 2012 soccer matches which, if it happens, will strike hard at Yanukovych’s personal prestige and the sensitivities of all Ukrainians.

The foreign ministry in Kiev warned last week that any targeting of the soccer championship to punish Yanukovych would “damage the interests of millions of ordinary Ukrainians that vote for various political parties or who are not interested in politics at all.”

Ukraine has at least one reliable friend in freshly inaugurated Russian president Vladimir Putin, who has dismissed any suggestion that Moscow might join such a boycott, saying “you can’t mix politics, business, and other issues with sport.”

HP unveils Envy Spectre XT Ultrabook, other thin-and-lights in various sizes

Image

What’s that? You’re hungry for more HP laptops? Good! Because we’re not nearly done yet! The company just expanded its line of Ultrabooks from two to five, and that’s not even counting this guy. And, the company also plans to sell so-called Sleekbooks — essentially, thin-and-light laptops that don’t quite meet Intel’s criteria for Ultrabooks. So what goodies to we have in store? First up, there’s the 13.3-inch Envy Spectre XT, whose all-metal body looks nothing like the glass-class clad Envy 14 Spectre we reviewed earlier this year. As with its big brother, the major selling point here is design — in this case, a 3.07-pound machine with a 14.5mm-thick profile. As for specs, you can expect an Ivy Bridge CPU, paired with a 128GB SSD and a battery rated for eight hours of runtime. Like the other Ultrabooks in HP’s stable, it has makes room for a USB 3.0 port, HDMI and an Ethernet jack, and similar to other Envys it comes with full copies of Adobe Premiere Elements and Photoshop Elements, along with a two-year subscription to Norton Internet Security. We’re told the warranty on this Envy is one year, not two, but users owners do get a dedicated customer support line, for what that’s worth.

Moving on, HP’s Envy-branded Ultrabooks and “Sleekbooks” will be available in 14- and and 15.6-inch screen sizes in each category, though the Ultrabook configs are naturally Intel-based, while the Sleekbooks will pack Intel or AMD chips. With the Sleekbooks, too, you can also choose optional discrete graphics if there’s an Intel processor inside. (The AMD versions have “discrete-class” graphics, which is really just a nod to the all-inclusive design of AMD’s application processing units.) If you go for the Sleekbook, you’ll also get up to nine hours of battery life; with the Intel-based Ultrabooks, that rating is eight or nine hours, depending on whether you opt for the 14- or 15-inch version. Of course, the Intel-based models are also home to various Intel-branded technologies, including Rapid Start, Identity Protection, Smart Response and Smart Connect.

One thing that won’t change is the industrial design: both the Ultrabooks and Sleekbooks will be offered in black and red. Both Ultrabooks are available today, starting at $750 for the 14-inch model and $800 for the 15-incher. The 14-inch Sleekbook is on sale today, too, starting at $700, though the 15-inch version doesn’t debut until June 20th, at which point it’ll start at $600. As for that Spectre XT, it’ll start at $1,000 and is expected to land June 8th. Until then, we’ve got a mix of photos, along with starting specs after the break.
